Known as the “City of Oaks and Azaleas” Bartow was founded in 1851 as Fort Blount. The city was renamed Bartow after Francis S. Bartow. It is located near the Peace River, which in the 1840’s was considered Seminole land. Today, three districts within the city are on the National Register of Historic Places. Bartow is a land of lakes and citrus groves; of friendly, family-owned antique shops and welcoming bed and breakfasts; an historic courthouse and the embedded Polk County Museum of Art and Genealogical Library.
