Floor Care and Maintenance
Hardwood Floor Care & Maintenance
Like any floor covering, factory-finished hardwood will show signs of wear over time, depending on the size and lifestyle of your family. By taking a few precautions and following a regular cleaning and maintenance routine, you can expect years of beauty and performance from your floors.
Regular Care & Maintenance
- Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove sand and dirt. Built-up grit can scratch and damage the surface.
- Use only a brush or felt vacuum head—never a beater bar. Make sure vacuum wheels are clean.
Spills
- Clean spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Caution: The floor is very slippery when wet. Allow it to dry completely before walking on it.
Cleaning
- Always sweep or vacuum before using a wood floor cleaner.
- Use only approved products such as Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner.
- Never allow excess cleaner or liquid to sit on the surface—it can permanently damage the wood.
Do not use:
- Harsh cleaners or abrasives
- Water, wet mops, or steam cleaners
- 2-in-1 cleaners, oils, soaps, waxes, citrus oils, lemon oil, tung oil, silicon, or ammonia products
Use of these products will harm your floor, void your warranty, and may cause unsatisfactory results.
Furniture
- Never slide furniture or heavy items across the floor. Use a dolly with protective plywood sheets.
- Always use floor protectors under heavy objects or furniture.
- Avoid hard rolling casters—use wide (1″ minimum) vinyl wheels.
- Keep casters clean and in good condition.
Additional Precautions
- Hot items: Never place hot objects directly on the floor.
- Pets: Clean up pet waste immediately. Keep nails trimmed and paws free of dirt, gravel, or grease.
- Shoes: Avoid walking on floors with spiked or damaged heels.
- Humidity: Maintain indoor humidity between 35%–55%. A humidifier in heating season helps prevent wood shrinkage.
Maintenance Tips
- Place doormats at all outside entrances to reduce dirt and moisture.
- Wipe up moisture spills immediately.
- Clean floors often, but avoid excessive water.
- Never use unapproved cleaners, soaps, or detergents. Even contaminated cloths can void your warranty.
- Use a Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner and Terry Cloth Mop Kit to safely remove most substances.
